Second wave hits Monday
Don’t worry about that dog barking at 6am Monday June 1st, EJ. Monday is scheduled for the second wave of Gypsy Moth spraying, from 5am-10am in the morning. The morning spray hits them at their most vulnerable time of day when the caterpillars are out and about starting to munch leaves, and when the day is calmest.
The spray pattern covers a large part of DG again, so leave the windows closed Sunday night if you’re in the direct line of fire. The spray itself is a bit sticky, but poses no hazard for any, oh, say dogs out early in the morning…

Spray path for Monday June 1st, 5am to 10am
The program is designed for suppression instead of eradication because it’s no longer possible to fully eradicate the gypsy moths. The US Forest Service has extensive information on gypsy moths, as does the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and the Village Forester page. There are a huge number of oak trees in Downers Grove on both public and private property, and the pest can be effectively suppressed by spraying at a fairly reasonable price, about $124,740 according to the January 27th council resolution authorizing the spray.
