Must read: TCD3 summary reports

October 20th, 2009 · by Mark Thoman · 1 Comment · TCD 3

In theory, this is the second most important process and planning documentation a community employs to guide itself into the future, and directly feeds the most important planning document, the Comprehensive Plan, which has not been updated since the mid 60′s.  Clicking on the covers will take you to the reports.  Both are large and may take some time to load.

TCD3 report cover

The TCD3 Summary Report and Action Plan (1.6MB) is the main document.

TCD3 appendix cover

The TCD3 Appendix of Community Outreach (1.3MB) has the research data.

On any given day there is a steady stream of ambulances rushing to Good Sam Hospital down Main Street. With their sirens screaming you can hear them a good mile away. They come from DG, Westmont, Lemont, Bolingbrook, and other nearby fire districts. Often the sirens come to an abrupt stop as the ambulances reach Main and the tracks. They find themselves stopped and waiting for not one, but often two or three trains to pass. My office is on Main by the tracks: I see and hear it all day long. Train traffic is increasing and is expected to increase by over 60% in the next 20 years. Over 50 years ago DuPage County developed plans to raise the track bed at Forest, Main and Washington so that with grade separation vehicles could travel freely under the tracks. Those plans now seem to be covered in dust somewhere. I worked with the Village for 10 years to plan for, and then build an underpass at Belmont. It takes that long. Now, no one in DG Village government seems to have an active interest in planning for additional track and street grade separations. That golden hour for saving a life isn’t extended if you are waiting five to ten minutes, or more, at the tracks.
