Thanksgiving meme

November 26th, 2009 · by Elaine Johnson · 2 Comments · From the Editor

cornucopiaI’ll be stepping away from the computer this weekend to luxuriate in family and count my blessings. Lots of good reasons to do so — today is both Thanksgiving (I’m cooking) and my wedding anniversary, tomorrow is my niece’s birthday, my firstborn just got his first college admittance letter and my baby is still humming the score from last week’s Music Man performance.

Last year, I used the occasion to reflect on the many aspects of Downers Grove that I have come to appreciate since moving here in 1994.

This year, I’m going to try a Thanksgiving meme — a short series of questions for readers to answer.  Here goes:

What is your favorite Downers Grove neighborhood or attraction?

What is your favorite local event or activity?

What aspect of Downers Grove are you most thankful for?

What specialty of your house is on the menu for today?

My answers:

What is your favorite Downers Grove neighborhood or attraction? Prince Pond, Hooper’s Hollow and the Tivoli

What is your favorite local event or activity? I love the Fourth of July parade and fireworks. All-American and all good.

What aspect of Downers Grove are you most thankful for? Right now it’s the fabulous teachers at North High School, as well as that school’s wonderful theater program. Every time we’ve left a conference in the past four years we thank our lucky stars that my son is learning from such sharp, creative and motivated professionals who all somehow manage to really get to know him as an individual.

What specialty of your house is on the menu for today? Brussels sprouts. Love ‘em.

And in keeping with the spirit of the day, I want to thank the readers of this blog for keeping me gainfully unemployed. Given the state of journalism these days, I guess there is something to be said for enjoying a large audience and community of readers, if not a paycheck.

Happy Thanksgiving.
