A reader wrote to ask after the Santa who for years welcomed children to his downtown digs at Curtiss and Main streets on Thursday nights.
“He is absolutely outstanding. He has a real beard and real boots, and he doesn’t do the boisterous ‘ho, ho, ho’ routine.”
But with Thursday night Santa visits eliminated this year, the reader wondered if his young son can still pay a visit to the Santa he’s been sharing his Christmas wish list with since 2003.
“At age 6, he’s old enough to notice the difference between people who play Santa and the ‘real’ Santa,” the reader writes.
Alas, Thursday Night Santa is no longer stopping in Downers Grove. Downtown merchants decided Sunday was a better day for visiting Santa’s quaint little house and Thursday Night Santa already had a Sunday commitment in St. Charles, said Erin Doherty of the Downtown Management Corp.
However, Saturday Santa is back again this year, while Sunday Santa, who rode his sleigh into town during the Nov. 27 Santa Parade, is new to Downers Grove.
Saturday Santa is especially good with older kids, Doherty says. He brings along his wife, Mrs. Claus, who welcomes each young visitor to Santa’s house. The two use an earpiece which allows Santa to overhear the kids’ names and other pertinent details, adding luster to his reputation as a jolly, magical old elf.
Which isn’t to say Sunday Santa doesn’t also have his charms, says Doherty. “He has a real beard.”
