Former Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matthew Cushing is set to be sworn in as park board commissioner at the board’s regular meeting at 7 p.m., Feb. 4 in the Lincoln Center.
Cushing, who played for the Steelers from 1999 through 2004, has been a resident of Downers Grove for about four years, said Dan Cermak, park district administrator. The father of three, who was a collegiate athlete at the University of Illinois, is now in the dental business.
Cushing will take the seat vacated by Ron Smith, who resigned from the board in December to take a job out of town. The seat will be up for election in 2013.
Cushing was one of seven residents who applied for the seat. The others were Linda Clevenger, William Grant, Kevin Johnson, Jacob Larson, Daniel O’Connell, and former park board commissioner Janis Sleeter.

Can this village find anymore public servants from U of I? I wonder if we are getting fresh view points. Nothing against Mr. Cushing at all, just and observation.
