Yesterday’s weather probably didn’t cut down the vote significantly, but a sunny day with temperatures above freezing probably would have increased the turnout by a few tenths of one percent.

The early date, I think, hurt a lot. Normally, I have my candidates picked several weeks before election day, if not earlier. I was going through candidate and newspaper websites on Monday night on several races, because I didn’t know enough about a number of candidates.

There is the only line about no one paying attention to presidential elections until after the World Series. Well, I think we may have figured out that no one pays attention to the Illinois primary until after the Super Bowl. With the primary being very early and the Super Bowl now being played in February, no one took any interest in the 2010 campaign.

A cynic might say, and there is probably a little bit of truth, that Illinois voters are tired of the slimey politics from both parties, and that there were no high-profile candidates who came across as being outside the Combine, as John Kass calls it, and ready to clean up the mess.

Without high-profile candidates committed to the reforms that voters want, there was no reason to vote yesterday.

I’m surprised–when I voted at Herrick yesterday, it was packed. I must have hit their one busy period.

I think ckfred is on the money, though–there doesn’t seem to be much point in voting, when we keep having the same problems year after year. It was hard to get enthusiastic about anyone in these races.

You guys rock at getting the vote out compare to where I live now only about 14.28% in Whiteside County. I guess too many candidates and too much transparency still equals “spin and lies” and voters discourse with faith in our system of government.

  • Earl "Faith in our system of GOV"

For what’s it is worth, I still believe in our Democracy and government.

    ckfred,

I would have to agree with you. The more recognizable candidates offer more of the same. IL voters are fed up with business as usual. I don’t see this stubborn state changing anytime soon.

Illinois politics stink. But I still don’t think that’s any excuse not to vote. There was lots of discussion about local candidates right here! The DuPage County Election Commission’s Web site provides info on polling places and sample ballots so you can check out candidates. Come on…

Remember: by *not* voting, you’re still just as responsible for putting those Illinois yahoos in office.
