The local angle

February 19th, 2010 · by Elaine Johnson · 1 Comment · People, Places and Things

Great showdown in the Olympic Men’s Figure Skating finals Feb. 18, with former Naperville resident Evan Lysacek winning the gold and a disgruntled Yevgeny Plushenko, the 2006 gold medalist who was looking for back-to-back titles, settling for silver.

Good drama, with Lysacek skating first in his set and Plushenko wrapping up the competition. And following the medal ceremony, good comedy thanks to NBC-5′s determination to find a local angle on Lysacek’s victory.

After the usual shots of cheering friends and neighbors, the reporter interviewed Lysacek’s foot doctor, presumably because a recent stress fracture in his left tootsie prevented Lysacek from attempting a quad in the competition.

There you go, Evan.  One minute you’re being crowned Olympic royalty, the next minute your feet of clay are the talk of the town.

As one guy tweeted last night: ” Why does the local press keep interviewing Evan Lysacek’s doctor, who just plugged his own website? Lame source for an interview, IMHO.

In mine, too.

Agreed it was lame, but since my wife recognized him on the TV I can now claim only 3 degrees of separation from an Olympic gold medalist (she had a free 15 minute consultation with him at her gym once)! I expect it’s things like that the TV news people use to justify doing this kind of story.
