I’ve added a new “State and Nation” page to allow readers to express their views on those issues without commandeering local threads to do so. Hat tip to Chad for this one.

Police reportedly were called to Rep. The group was chanting and displaying pairs of shoes as a symbol of Illinois residents who have or will die [...]

City vs. suburb

February 12th, 2010 · 11 Comments · National Politics

Editor’s note: I’ve noted that this blog’s open threads have attracted a wide range of comments that go well beyond the village limits of Downers Grove, Ill. To that end, I’ve decided to mix things up a bit with some posts that address state or national issues impacting DG. For those who only want to [...]

January 15th, 2010 · 13 Comments · National Politics, Public health

Readers have been requesting a thread about one of the biggest issues of recent years — health care reform — and I finally have a local angle to tie it to. Docs 4 Patient Care, a politically neutral, grassroots coalition of  physicians, will sponsor a town hall meeting to discuss health care reform at 6:30 [...]

There have been many articles about the budgetary crisis gripping various states and cities, including our own town. 9/11

September 11th, 2009 · 8 Comments · Features, In the News, National Politics

I’m going to open this thread for anyone who wishes to comment, as I see Chad has already done on a previous thread. My kids have grown up in the frightening new world that was ushered in on Sept. 11, 2001. I was serving my kindergartner breakfast when my brother phoned and told me there [...]

Big surprise

December 9th, 2008 · 27 Comments · National Politics

Excuse this intrusion into Downers Grove news, but The New York Times is reporting that Gov. Rod Blagojevich has been arrested on corruption charges relating to the selection of Sen. Barack Obama’s replacement. Yet another stellar showing by an Illinois governor. The rest of the country must snicker at our penchant for electing future jailbirds. [...]

Fault lines

It’s impossible to read the financial news out of New York and Washington without wondering how it will impact Downers Grove. Clearly, the local housing market may still be on the way down. A story in today’s Wall Street Journal describes the rise in foreclosures of million-dollar homes — this just two days after a [...]
