DGCS, Fairview team up to offer music and art

The Downers Grove Choral Society and Fairview Vibrant Living Communities will present a musical performance and art exhibit at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 14, in the Great Hall at Fairview Village, 200 Village Drive.

Earlier this season the DGCS partnered with Fairview to combine assets of both organizations and increase accessibility of events to the community.

DGCS accompanist Jeffrey Panko and Jean Hatmaker, principal cellist for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, will perform Brahms piano and cello sonatas.

Following the performance, Fairview will present light refreshments and an exhibit of resident artworks. The event is open to the public. A donation of $20 is suggested, with all proceeds benefiting the Downers Grove Choral Society.

Bacon Brothers to appear at Tivoli May 14

The Bacon Brothers, a popular folk and blues duo featuring actor Kevin Bacon and his musician brother Michael, will appear at 8 p.m.,  Fri., May 14,  at the Tivoli as the spring fundraiser for the Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58. Note that the date has changed since the concert was first announced.

The Bacon Brothers have been playing together for 14 years and recently released their sixth album, “New Year’s Day.” Kevin Bacon’s many film credits include Footloose, JFK and A Few Good Men. Michael Bacon’s recent projects include “African-American Lives” (1 and 2) and Marie Antoinette.

“The band is amazing,” said Debbie Drew, event chair who has seen the brother perform five times. “They are very talented musicians and songwriters.”

“I’m thrilled that the Education Foundation of Downers Grove District 58 is able to bring a big name to the Tivoli Theater and Downers Grove,” she said.  “In this economic climate more than ever we need to raise funds for the children in our school district.”

Tickets for the show will go on sale Dec. 18 at the foundation’s Web site, at the Community Bank of Downers Grove and the district’s Administrative Service Center, 1860 W. 63rd St.

Ticket prices are $100 for seating in the first six rows of the center section, $75 for rows seven through 16 of the center section, and $50 for all remaining seats.

“This will be a sellout,” Drews said. “Get your tickets early.”

The foundation has struggled in recent years to match the huge successes of spring shows like “Second City” and was seeking a sure hit for 2010. The Bacon Brothers promises to be it.

Plus, as a bonus, everyone in the audience will become unofficial participants in the most famous example of the Six Degrees of Separation phenomenon.
